Ventilation

Glory Farm is an interesting place. Just as the barnyard has a collection of buildings, the house is also a collection of buildings. While they look congruent, close inspection indicates that there are at least 4 different sections to the house. Local lore is that the expansions were created by moving other existing homes and attaching them to the original core. That would certainly explain why the flooring runs different directions in the various sections and why millwork doesn't match from one section to another.

It's been a busy week, and took longer than we expected, but I'm happy to say that the number of windows that have similar millwork treatment is increasing. In fact, now the front window matches the millwork around the nearby door.

It appears that the double hung windows haven't operated since the first coat of paint was applied over the original brown varnish. Four coats of paint sealed everything and insured windows couldn't be opened for ventilation. Now two of the side windows can open, just in time for ventilation during the summer heat.

There are lots of places around here that date back to the late 1800s. Not all of them are worth saving, but in the process of restoring Glory Farm, Ellen and her family are creating a welcoming and comforting place for family and friends. It's been a delight to experience that welcome this week.
