Dawson Creek, British Columbia is regarded as Mile 0
for the Alaska Highway. There is a large
banner style sign next to the traffic circle in town,
complete with a plaque on the stone monument below.
Apparently, this sign is not the “official” sign.
Two blocks away is the “official” Mile 0 sign on the
corner of 10th Street and 102 Avenue, steps from the
Alaska Highway House which had an excerpt from the
original Army orders on the wall. They had a very small museum, and showed an
hour long PBS special on the construction of the highway.
We took the 10 km side loop on the original road
alignment to see the historic Kiskatinaw bridge. This bridge is the last of the
original timber bridges still in use.
Home for the night was the Walmart parking lot in Fort St.
John at Milepost 47.
