Folks started stirring in the kitchen at North Canyon about 7:30 a.m. but that wasn't the first time for many. About 4:30 a.m. there were a few sprinkles that resulted in all sorts of headlamps flashing and people moving as they gathered equipment left out overnight to dry. A gust of wind blew down one tent.
As light started to filter into the canyon, a raven decided to keep a close eye on any opportunities.
Some folks hiked in North Canyon so we didn't get on the water until nearly 11:30 a.m. I rode with Greg Hatton in the Portola for the first part of the day. Great fun and a good education as he explained why he was choosing his line and his setup through each rapid.
We traveled through the Roaring Twenties today. Nine rapids rated between class 4 and class 6 in 9 miles. We had good runs all morning but did need to do some bailing after each rapid.
Cece Mortenson rowed the Susie Too with Helen manning the bailing bucket when needed.
We stopped for lunch just above Hansbrough-Richards Rapid (class 6). I switched back to Izzy's raft for the afternoon run through four more rapids before reaching camp at Shinumo Wash.
I got my tent set up and my socks hung out to dry. As the trip went on, I got lazier, and didn't use the tent unless it was a layover day, looked like it might rain, or I wanted some protection from wind.
Meanwhile, some of the crew gathered on the boats for Happy Hour and to discuss the events of the day.
Pam Mortenson started prepping for dinner which was a signal to the rest of her team to join her.
After dinner the cans were crushed
and folks started gathering around the fire pan while Leif Mortenson set up the IT office to back up the video of the day and to see if a good enough satellite connection could be made to send out
