With over three days to cover 25 miles between Whitmore Wash and Diamond Creek, we had a lazy start. After saying goodbye to those hiking out, we were on the river about 10:45 a.m. for a short day with no named rapids.
There were lots of lava flows in the area, sometimes filling former canyons like in the previous photo or the former river bed. If you click on this picture to get the larger version, you'll see the lava is on top of a cobble layer that was river bed at one time.
The river has cleared significantly and is now a beautiful green color.
The nature of the canyon in this section is much more open. We continued to enjoy warm weather but watched the clouds build with slight concern. The folks that hiked in to Whitmore had also provided a weather report suggesting a chance of rain in our future.
Home for the night was the Parashant Canyon camp. Throughout the afternoon the clouds built up and then dispersed again without dropping any precipitation.
Dinner was tacos with the tomatoes carefully cut by Tony, the boat builder and fearless cataraft captain.
